Tam Coc - The Three Caves
Cruise through iconic rice paddies and limestone caves on the Ngo Dong River
Quick Info
Tam Coc, meaning "Three Caves," is one of Ninh Binh's most iconic attractions. The boat ride along the Ngo Dong River takes you through three natural limestone caves - Hang Ca (First Cave), Hang Hai (Second Cave), and Hang Ba (Third Cave) - flanked by towering karst mountains and, in season, stunning rice paddies.
What makes Tam Coc unique is the traditional foot-rowing technique used by the local boatwomen. They skillfully navigate the narrow river using their feet on the oars, a sight that's fascinating to watch. The scenery here has earned Tam Coc comparisons to Ha Long Bay, earning it the nickname "Ha Long Bay on Land."
The Three Caves
- Hang Ca (First Cave): The largest at 127m long. Dramatic entrance with stunning views
- Hang Hai (Second Cave): 60m long, darker and more enclosed
- Hang Ba (Third Cave): 50m long, the smallest but atmospheric
Rice Field Seasons
The rice fields are what make Tam Coc world-famous:
- Late May - Early June: Golden rice fields (most photogenic, harvest time)
- March - May: Lush green rice paddies
- September - October: Second crop turns golden
- November - February: Harvested fields (less scenic but peaceful)
For the iconic golden rice paddy photos, time your visit for late May to early June. See our rice fields guide for more seasonal details.
