How to Get to Ninh Binh
Complete transportation guide from Hanoi with bus, train, and private transfer options
Ninh Binh is located approximately 90-110 km south of Hanoi, making it one of the most accessible day trip destinations from Vietnam's capital. There are three main ways to get there, each with its own advantages.
By Bus (Most Popular)
2 - 2.5 hours
70,000 - 150,000 VND ($3 - $6)
Giap Bat Bus Station, Hanoi
Every 15-30 minutes
Buses depart regularly from Giap Bat bus station in southern Hanoi. Limousine buses offer comfortable seats and sometimes include hotel pickup. Popular operators include Hoang Long, Xuan Thanh, and various limousine services. The bus drops you at Ninh Binh bus station, from which Tam Coc is about 7 km away.
By Train
2 - 2.5 hours
60,000 - 200,000 VND ($2.50 - $8)
Hanoi Railway Station
Several daily, first at 6:00 AM
The Reunification Express runs through Ninh Binh on its way south. Check schedules on the Vietnam Railways website. The train offers a scenic and comfortable ride with different seat classes. Hard seats are cheapest, while soft seats and AC berths cost more but are more comfortable. Book tickets at the station or online.
The earliest train departs at 6:00 AM and the last return train leaves around 5:27 PM - important to note if you're doing a day trip.
By Private Car / Taxi
1.5 - 2 hours
~1,200,000 - 1,500,000 VND ($50 - $65)
Your hotel in Hanoi
Groups, families, comfort
A private car or taxi is the most comfortable option, especially for families or small groups. You get door-to-door service and can stop along the way. The price is per car, not per person, making it reasonable when shared.
From Ninh Binh Airport / Train Station to Hotels
Once you arrive in Ninh Binh city, you'll need to get to your accommodation area. Most tourists stay in the Tam Coc area (7 km from the city) or near Trang An (8 km). Options include:
- Taxi: About 80,000-120,000 VND to Tam Coc. Mai Linh and Hoa Lu are reliable taxi companies.
- Grab: Available but with 10-15 minute wait times. Usually cheaper than taxis.
- Hotel pickup: Many hotels and homestays offer free pickup if you book directly.
- Motorbike rental: Available at the bus/train station from 80,000-150,000 VND/day.
